Wildcat Wednesday Sydney Laflen

It's Wildcat Wednesday! Every Wednesday, we will spotlight a member of the LR Wildcat family.

This week we are introducing you to Sydney Laflen!

-----------------------------

Job Title:
High School Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 Teacher

Tell us about your family:
I have two daughters: Grace, a University of Nebraska graduate who currently works for Gallup in the Clifton Strengths Program, and Hannah, a junior at Lindenwood University pursuing a double major in criminal justice and psychology and is also a national champion competitive cheerleader. They share the same birthday but are two years apart, and it's usually the first thing they mention when introducing themselves. I have two 4-year old rescue dogs: Arlo, a 95-pound Malamute/Husky/Lab mix, and June, a 45-pound Husky/Shepherd/Cattle Dog mix. They are my security team.

How long have you been a teacher/worked in education?
This is my 31st year teaching and my 7th at Logan-Rogersville.

What makes you passionate about education?
I love helping people learn new things and show them they can be successful even if they are unsure at first. Learning new things helps us learn to think for ourselves and opens the door to choices.

What is your must-have classroom item?
I have always worked on whiteboards, so I always need expo markers.

If you had to choose a different grade/subject to teach, what would it be?
I spent 17 years teaching at OTC, and I enjoy being on a college campus and teaching adults as well.

What is something about you that might surprise people?
In my free time I build and refinish furniture. It started as a necessity, and has become my stress relief.

What is one item on your bucket list?
To travel back down Route 66 to see how it has changed since 2011.
