Teachers representing the PK-5 mathematics curriculum team once again took part in a professional learning course known as Add+Vantage September 10-13,2018.    This training was a follow-up to the work we began in winter 2018 and will continue to work on throughout this school year and next. The purpose is to support elementary teachers, special education instructors and math interventionists in diagnosing and advancing student understanding and numeracy development. The four-day course is part one of a two-part series that focuses on early numeracy development.  Course one provides teachers with a strong foundation in whole number topics (i.e. structuring number, addition, subtraction, number words, and numerals) that if not mastered in the early grades may appear later as holes in understanding for older students and interfere with the development of future mathematical understanding. The second part of the Add+Vantage training will expand and deepen teachers’ knowledge and understanding of mathematical development for all students and will focus on the use of diagnostic assessments for multiplication, division, and place value understanding.  The district’s goal is to train all K-5 teachers in Add+Vantage over the next three years.
