VARSITY CHOIR

 

COURSE RATIONALE

Besides being an auditioned, performing ensemble, the purpose of varsity choir is to develop mature musicians and individuals that have a firm foundation of vocal music and know how to apply this knowledge to their ensemble performance.  This class endeavors to educate each student into becoming a well rounded singer and musician therefore giving them an appreciation of good choral music and literature, and also a fun, but challenging musical experience.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A large, performing choir based on an audition process.  Students will be exposed to a wide genre of choral literature and performance experiences.  Areas of study include music theory, music history, sight-reading, ear training, proper vocal care and technique, small and large ensemble participation, district and state music festivals, and semester concerts.

 


COURSE COMPETENCIES

The student will be able to

  1. Explore future job opportunities.
    1. Decide future possibilities within the many faceted career opportunities in vocal music.
  2. Use their listening skills.
    1. Use in depth ear training with sight reading to perform high school level repertoire and some college level.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of music history.
    1. Distinguish between the major time periods of music history and the stylish differences of each.  Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of  cultural and historical influences.
    1. Recognize and explain the differences of styles and genres of music literature as they relate to a society and history.
  5. Perform with correct vocal production.
    1. Recognize, understand, and correctly perform with well trained vocal technique.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of expression within the ensemble.
    1. Develop and examine individual differences among the ensemble.
  7. Perform written music.
    1. Demonstrate, recognize, and execute the elements of vocal literature.
  8. Perform various genres of choral literature.
    1. Understand proper practices for literature preparation and demonstrate these concepts in rehearsal and performance.
  9. Demonstrate understanding of more complex rhythms.
    1. Comprehend and execute specific rhythms from basic to complex within a piece of choral literature.
  10. Critique and evaluate written music literature.
    1. Exhibit a well developed understanding of music vocabulary and theory in their ability to analyze.
  11. Perform in several foreign languages.
    1. Sing with proper diction and style, literature in a variety of foreign languages (Italian, Latin, German, and French).
  12. Perform in an ensemble setting.
    1. Sing his/her specific voice part within four to eight part harmony literature.
  13. Demonstrate care for the voice.
    1. Explain, demonstrate and model proper care and maintenance for their voice.
  14. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of expression within music.
    1. Develop and define their individual responses and expression within a piece of choral literature.
  15. Participate in contest experiences.
    1. Perform in various entries of district and state contest levels: Solo, small ensemble or large ensemble categories.
