COURSE RATIONALE

Based on the philosophy of the Greene County R-VIII School District, the Library Media Centers (LMCs) serve an integral part of the district’s education system.  The mission of the Library Media program is to provide an environment that enables students and staff to be effective users of ideas and information.  The LMCs will provide students with an environment and materials to facilitate students in lifelong thinking, learning and communicating effectively in order to assume the full responsibility of American citizenship.  The LMCs will provide materials and support to facilitate the staff in curriculum needs and professional growth.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Library science is a general course designed to provide an understanding of circulation policies, appropriate library behavior, proper care of library materials, location skills, use of the computerized catalog, familiarity with fiction, nonfiction, periodicals and reference materials, as well as, knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System.  An appreciation of literature is an integral part of the primary level course.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

COURSE COMPETENCIES

 

By the end of grade 2, students will be able to

  1. demonstrate knowledge of library rules and behavior including the following.
    1. Appropriate behavior during browsing, checkout, and instruction
    2. Use of shelf markers to keep books in appropriate order
    3. Which materials may be checked out
    4. Checkout time is one week for all student materials
    5. How to follow specific directions
  2. demonstrate knowledge of circulation policies and procedures including the following.
    1. Location and type of materials which may be checked out
    2. Length of time materials may be checked out
    3. Overdues and renewals of materials
    4. Lost and/or damaged material policies
    5. Computer checkout procedures
  3. demonstrate appreciated for literature including the following.
    1. There are many different genres of books
    2. Reading can be fun, teach new information, and aid in researching information
    3. There are many noteworthy authors and illustrators
    4. There are many sources of literature – books, periodicals, audio, and video
    5. How to listen to and interpret stories
  4. locate materials using the following skills.
    1. Locate materials in easy fiction, chapter fiction, Dewey Decimal subjects, biography, reference, and periodical areas
    2. Understand each section has a specific arrangement of materials
    3. Use shelf markers to help keep materials in order
    4. Understand that the call number of a book shows its appropriate location
  5. demonstrate technology skills including the following.
    1. Familiarity with technology terms - keyboard, mouse, screen/monitor, scroll, and highlighted.
    2. Locate library materials using computer OPAC

  6. Utilize materials using knowledge of the following.
    1. Library terms – title, author, illustrator, illustration, cover, spine, spine label, call number, title page, table of contents, and index
    2. Proper book care at school and home – carrying, protecting, and using bookmarks
    3. How to locate and use library materials using the OPAC
    4. How to choose age-appropriate materials of personal subject interest and how to browse for materials of interest.
