LOGAN-ROGERSVILLE R-VIII MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM

Pre-Calculus

Rationale

Mathematics allows a common-ground communication between the observable world and prediction and explanation.  Pre-Calculus provides the necessary mathematic foundations for the study of higher mathematics.  As technology and the knowledge base continue to grow, our experience with higher mathematics will also need to grow in order to keep up with the world around us.

Course Description

Major topics to be studied in the class will be trigonometry and the beginnings of Calculus I and Calculus II.  While not a substitution for, students that complete this class successfully should be able to enter college Trigonometry or Calculus classes with more than ample understanding of the subject.

Competencies

  1. Students will construct simple lines and equations in rectangular coordinates.
  2. Students will solve problems involving functions and their inverses.
  3. Students will use the six (6) trigonometric functions to solve right triangle problems.
  4. Students will use the concepts of the unit circle to solve right triangle problems.
  5. Students will use the trigonometric identities to solve triangle and circle problems.
  6. Students will solve trigonometric equations.
  7. Students will solve exponential and logarithmic problems.
  8. Students will calculate rates of change.
  9. Students will solve problems involving limits.
  10. Students will find derivatives of functions.
  11. Students will solve real world problems with the use of derivatives.
  12. Students will use concepts of derivatives to find maximum and minimum values.
  13. Students will calculate definite integrals.
  14. Students will use integrals to solve problems in area and volume.
  15. Students will use technology and simple programming to solve calculus and trigonometric problems.
