LOGAN-ROGERSVILLE R-VIII VOCAL MUSIC CURRICULUM
SIXTH GRADE

 

COURSE RATIONALE

Besides building a foundation for vocal music at the middle school level, the purpose of grade six vocal music is to give the students the opportunity to express themselves artistically on both individual and group level.  This is implemented through the use of two-part singing, ear training, sight-reading, proper vocal care and production, listening, visual tools, music theory, performing, class discussion and participation.  By involving the students musically, they are able to express themselves.

 

COURSE DISCRIPTION

A general course designed to introduce students to the middle school level of vocal music.  Instructional time consists of one class per week.  Material covered will include very general music concepts, theory, and avenues for performance.

 


COURSE COMPETENCIES

The student will be able to

  1. Perform in an ensemble setting.
    1. The student will be able to sing his/her specific voice part within two-part harmony literature.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of how to care for their voice.
    1. Student will be able to explain, demonstrate, and model how to properly care and maintain their vocal chords.
  3. Sing in different languages.
    1. Student will be able to sing with correct diction, literature in foreign languages, therefore broadening the students’ cultural awareness.
  4. Critique and evaluate written music. 
    1. Student will be able to exhibit a basic use and understanding of music vocabulary and theory.
  5. Peform basic rhythms.
    1. Understand and execute specific patterns of basic rhythms within a piece of written literature.
  6. Perform a variety of musical literatures.
    1. Understand proper practices for preparing literature and demonstrate these concepts in rehearsal and performance.
  7. Perform written music.
    1. Demonstrate, execute, and recognize the elements of vocal music.
  8. Understand the importance of expression within music.
    1. Develop and define their own personal response and expression within a piece of musical literature.
  9. Understand expression within an ensemble.
    1. Develop and examine individual differences among the ensemble.
  10. Perform with correct vocal production.
    1. Understand, recognize, and perform with proper expression, intonation and vocal production practices in both rehearsal and performance.
  11. Understand the cultural and historical importances of music.
    1. Recognize the difference between styles and pieces of literature and appreciate all genres of music.
