COURSE RATIONALE

Based on the philosophy of the Greene County R-VIII School District, the Library Media Center (LMC) will serve an integral part of the school’s education system.  The mission of the Library Media program is to provide an environment that enables students to be effective users of ideas and information.   The LMC will provide students with an environment and materials to facilitate lifelong thinking, learning and communicating effectively in order to assume the full responsibility of American citizenship.  The LMCs will provide materials and support to facilitate the staff in curriculum needs and professional growth.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Library is an ongoing course of study designed to provide an understanding of circulation policies, appropriate library behavior, proper care of library materials, location skills, use of the computerized catalog, familiarity with the fiction and nonfiction, as well as reference materials; familiarity with the Dewey Decimal System; and literature appreciation.  In addition, students are familiarized with the Acceptable Use Policy regarding use of the school computers and with a variety of computer applications, such as internet, Microsoft Word, computerized reference materials, and saving to a file server.  This is an ongoing experience beginning with Freshman Orientation, then sophomore research skills unit, and continuing, both formally and informally, in assigned research through senior year.

  2. demonstrate proficiency of location skills including the following.
    1. Fiction evaluation
    2. Types of non-fiction
    3. Dewey Decimal System
    4. Organization in Media Center
  3. demonstrate search and retrieval procedures of electronic sources using the following skills.
    1. Proficiency of online catalog
    2. Proficiency of Internet search
    3. Selection and evaluation of available information
    4. Proficiency of online catalog search
  4. demonstrate knowledge of library policies and procedures using the following skills.
    1. Demonstrate acceptable behavior
    2. Demonstrate knowledge of circulation policies
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of library usage
    4. Demonstrate knowledge of Acceptable Use Policy
  5. locate, organize, and evaluate information and ideas using the following skills.
    1. Conduct searches
    2. Select useful primary and secondary resources
    3. Analyze collected information
    4. Evaluate information for accuracy and bias
