JUNIOR VARSITY CHOIR

 

COURSE RATIONALE

Besides being a general course of choral music, the purpose of JV choir is to teach a student the importance of good quality choral music and literature and proper vocal production and care.  This class is meant to establish students who will become well-rounded citizens of the community with a basic understanding of music.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

A general choir open to any high school student, not based on performance level of musical maturity.  Students will be exposed to a general course of study, building a basic knowledge and foundation of choral music.  This is an entry-level ensemble, not geared solely on performance.  Areas of study include proper vocal production, how to take care of the voice, basic music theory, easy three and four part singing, musical theatre, music history, group participation, and different genres of vocal music.

 

 


COURSE COMPETENCIES

The student will be able to

  1. Explore future job opportunities.
    1. Decide future possibilities within the many faceted career opportunities in vocal music.
  2. Use their listening skills.
    1. Use basic ear training with sight reading to perform basic high school level literature.
  3. Demonstrate understanding of music history.
    1. Distinguish between the major time periods of music history and the stylish differences of each:  Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of  cultural and historical influences.
    1. Recognize the differences between genres of music and understand their relation to the society of the times.
  5. Sing with correct vocal production.
    1. Understand, and perform with proper vocal technique and intonation.
  6. Demonstrate understanding of expression within the ensemble.
    1. Develop and examine individual differences among the ensemble.
  7. Perform written music.
    1. Understand and demonstrate the basic elements of vocal literature.
  8. Perform a variety of literature.
    1. Understand proper practices for literature preparation and demonstrate these concepts in rehearsal and performance.
  9. Demonstrate an understanding of basic rhythms.
    1. Understand and perform basic rhythm patterns within piece of music.
  10. Critique and evaluate written music literature.
    1. Exhibit a basic understanding of music vocabulary and theory in their ability to analyze.
  11. Sing in foreign languages.
    1. Be exposed to music in other languages and to sing them with correct diction.
  12. Perform in an ensemble setting.
    1. Sing his/her specific voice part within three to four part harmony literature.
  13. Demonstrate care for the voice.
    1. Explain, demonstrate and model proper care and maintenance for their voice.
  14. Demonstrate understanding of the importance of expression within music.
    1. Develop and define their individual responses and expression within a piece of choral literature.
