COURSE RATIONALE

The rationale behind the teaching of health is to familiarize the student with wellness concepts that apply to their daily lives.  The course reinforces wellness behaviors and develops critical thinking skills.  We strive to teach students they can make choices that will lead to optimum health.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

One of our major goals for our health class is to direct our students toward “health literacy”.  Students will be able to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services.  The instructional units covered will include body systems, learning how to cope with interrelationships in social situations, develop an understanding of how to reduce risks in daily lives, and to maintain ones own personal health.

 


COURSE COMPETENCIES

By the end of grade 8, students will be able to

  1. Function in interrelationships in social situations using the following skills.
    1. Peer pressure support.
    2. Making choices.
    3. Working in groups.
    4. Listening and communications skills.
    5. Knowledge of public health agencies.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the independence of body systems including the following.
    1. Endocrine and changes that occur in puberty.
    2. Nervous system including the brain, nerves, and spinal cord.
    3. Immune system.
    4. Reproductive and fetal development.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of nutrition principles and practices including the following.
    1. Nutritional value of foods and the effects on the body at various ages.
    2. Factors that influence a safe food supply.
    3. Direct relationships between diet and exercise.
  4. Demonstrate knowledge of personal and family health including the following.
    1. Life-time benefit of regular physical activity
    2. Benefits of developing and maintaining long-term relationships.
    3. Health-related issues in the various stages of human life cycle, pregnancy in particular.
  5. Evaluate health and body image information presented through the media.
  6. Demonstrate life management skills including the following.
    1. Stress management.
    2. Conflict resolution.
    3. Working collaboratively.
    4. Making decisions.
    5. Setting goals.

  7. Demonstrate knowledge of disease prevention and control including the following.
    1. Communicable disease transmission, growth, incubation, and treatment.
    2. HIV/AIDS
    3. STD’s signs and symptoms, permanent complications, and prevention.
    4. Cancers and prevention.
    5. Role of CDC, NIH, and local public health departments.
    6. Chronic disease development, prevention, management, and treatment.
    7. Disease in human history.
  8. Identify injury prevention and safety measures including the following.
    1. Address social problems facing teens.
    2. CPR, Heinlich
    3. Weather and sports related emergencies and first-aid procedures.
  9. Demonstrate knowledge of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
    1. Social and personal problems related to tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs.
    2. Anabolic steroids
    3. Alcohol
    4. Chemical substance, family, and community health.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of environmental health including the following.
    1. Preserving a healthy environment.
