COURSE RATIONAL

The Guidance and Counseling program in the Logan-Rogersville School District strives to assist students at various grade levels to become life-long, independent learners who are capable of making appropriate decision and good life choices; who can become positive contributors to society; and who can communicate effectively.  Realizing that students must live in a global society, the Guidance and Counseling program helps students develop life skills and plan for the future.  Through the Guidance and Counseling program , which strives to liberate the intellect and emphasizes development of the whole child, students develop through self-actualization and personal growth.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Guidance and Counseling are integral parts of  the Logan-Rogersville Greene County R-VIII School District’s total educational program.  The program is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents.  The guidance program includes curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.  The program is designed to address the needs of all students by helping them to acquire competencies in Career Planning and Exploration, Knowledge of Self and Others, and Educational and Vocational Development.

 

 


COURSE COMPETENCIES

By the end of grade 2, students will be able to

  1. Demonstrate understanding of how being male or female relates to school and work including the following.
    1. Boys and girls can work and play together.
    2. Boys and girls can do any classroom job.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of careers including knowledge of the following.
    1. Different jobs in the community.
    2. Some reasons people work.
    3. Some things he/she likes to do.
    4. How to find out more about jobs and careers.
    5. Why people need to work together.
    6. Good work habits.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of how to use leisure time including knowledge of the following.
    1. What he/she likes to do for fun.
    2. Different hobbies, sports, and activities to do in spare time.
  4. Demonstrate understanding of others and getting along with others including knowledge of the following.
    1. That not all people are alike.
    2. People who are different from him/her.
    3. How to ask parents/teachers and/or other adults for help.
    4. How to handle teasing.
    5. How to handle problems and where to get help.
    6. How to make and keep friends.
    7. How to get along with boys and girls.
    8. How to be a good friend.
  5. Demonstrate understanding of themselves and accepting themselves including knowledge of the following.

  10. Plan for school using the following skills.
    1. Make decisions at school that fit one’s interests and abilities.
    2. Demonstrate good organizational skills.
    3. Demonstrate understanding of what will be expected of him/her in school.
