COURSE RATIONAL

The Guidance and Counseling program in the Logan-Rogersville School District strives to assist students at various grade levels to become life-long, independent learners who are capable of making appropriate decision and good life choices; who can become positive contributors to society; and who can communicate effectively.  Realizing that students must live in a global society, the Guidance and Counseling program helps students develop life skills and plan for the future.  Through the Guidance and Counseling program , which strives to liberate the intellect and emphasizes development of the whole child, students develop through self-actualization and personal growth.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Guidance and Counseling are integral parts of  the Logan-Rogersville Greene County R-VIII School District’s total educational program.  The program is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents.  The guidance program includes curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.  The program is designed to address the needs of all students by helping them to acquire competencies in Career Planning and Exploration, Knowledge of Self and Others, and Educational and Vocational Development.

 

 

 


COMPETENCIES

By the end of grade 8, students will be able to

  1. demonstrate understanding of exploring and planning for careers including the following.
    1. Know how to explore careers in which he/she may be interested.
    2. Understand his/her interests and abilities and how they help make career choices.
    3. Understand how to prepare for careers in which he/she may be interested.
    4. Understand the importance of making plans for the future.
  2. prepare for finding jobs including using the following skills.
    1. Know what employers expect of workers.
    2. Know how to apply for a job.
    3. Know job interview skills.
  3. plan for school and beyond including the following.
    1. Understand high school credit and graduation requirements.
    2. Know how to select high school courses that help meet his/her needs, interests, and career goals.
    3. Know how academic knolls such as math, reading, and science relate to career goals.
    4. Understand how completing high school will better prepare him/her for the job market.
    5. Understand how completing high school will better prepare him/her for further education.
    6. Know the classes offered by the area vocational technical school.

    3. Know how to organize class and homework materials.
    4. Be able to take good notes.
    5. Know how to start and finish assignments well.
  5. demonstrate knowledge of the effects of alcohol and other drugs including the following.
    1. Know what drugs and alcohol do to one’s body and mind.
    2. Know how to help a friend.
    3. Know where to get help for himself/herself or a friend who has a problem with drugs or alcohol.
    4. Know how to say “No” when friends or other people try to get him/her to use drugs or alcohol.
    5. Know how the use of drugs and alcohol may affect one’s relationship with others.

  6. demonstrate understanding of and getting along with others including the following.
    1. Understand friends and classmates.
    2. Know effective ways of communicating feelings and thoughts.
    3. Know how to be a good friend.
    4. Respect other people even though they may be different.
    5. Be able to talk to someone when he/she needs to.

    1. Know how to identify the real problem when worried or upset.
    2. Know how to come up with many possible solutions to a problem.
    3. Know what is important in setting goals.
    4. Know how to make good decisions.
    5. Know how to evaluate decisions and/or change them.

    1. Understand what is important to him/her (values).

    3. Understand how thoughts and feelings affect their behavior.
    4. Know how to handle problems or where to get help.
