COURSE RATIONAL

The Guidance and Counseling program in the Logan-Rogersville School District strives to assist students at various grade levels to become life-long, independent learners who are capable of making appropriate decision and good life choices; who can become positive contributors to society; and who can communicate effectively.  Realizing that students must live in a global society, the Guidance and Counseling program helps students develop life skills and plan for the future.  Through the Guidance and Counseling program , which strives to liberate the intellect and emphasizes development of the whole child, students develop through self-actualization and personal growth.

 

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Guidance and Counseling are integral parts of  the Logan-Rogersville Greene County R-VIII School District’s total educational program.  The program is developmental by design and includes sequential activities organized and implemented by certified school counselors with the support of teachers, administrators, students, and parents.  The guidance program includes curriculum, individual planning, responsive services, and system support.  The program is designed to address the needs of all students by helping them to acquire competencies in Career Planning and Exploration, Knowledge of Self and Others, and Educational and Vocational Development.

 

 


COMPETENCIES

At the end of grade 12, students will be able to

  1. Explore and plan for careers using the following skills.
    1. Develop a career plan.
    2. Knowledge of possible careers and world of work.
    3. Explore careers in a specific area in which he/she is interested.
    4. Develop plans beyond graduation.
    5. Demonstrate understanding of his/her interests and abilities and how these can help make a career choice.
  2. Plan high school courses including the following.
    1. Know the requirements for high school graduation.
    2. Explore all courses offering description and prerequisites before making selections.
    3. Select courses that will help him/her meet career goals (4-year plans reviewed and changed).
  3. Make decisions about college using the following skills.
    1. Exploring various colleges and what they offer.
    2. Pick a college.
    3. Decide on a field of study.
    4. Obtain scholarships and financial aid information.]
  4. Demonstrate understanding about and accepting of self  including the following.
    1. Demonstrate confidence in himself/herself.
    2. Understand, accept, and like himself/herself.
    3. Handle personal difficulties.
  5. Make decisions using the following skills.
    1. Develop many possible solutions to a problem.
    2. Accept responsibility for own actions.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of the physical effects of AIDS including  the following.
    1. Knowledge of ways one is infected with the AIDS virus.
    2. Knowledge of symptoms of AIDS.
    3. Knowledge of theories of AIDS.
  7. Demonstrate improved study and basic learning skills in the following areas.
    1. Writing, reading, speaking, listening and math skills.
    2. Test-taking strategies.
    3. Proper study techniques and strategies.
    4. Taking proper notes.
  8. Demonstrate knowledge about post-secondary education learned from friends and others including the following.
    1. What problems to anticipate during college.
    2. What problems to anticipate when seeking employment.
    3. Expectations when entering the military.
  9. Plan for school and beyond using the following.
    1. Visit vocational programs before enrollment.
    2. Demonstrate understanding of enrollment requirements and selection procedures for specific courses.
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of basic skills relate to vocational goals.
    4. Knowledge of vocational interests and aptitudes.
    5. Use assistance in enrolling in a vocational program in which she has interests, aptitudes, and abilities.
  10. Prepare for finding jobs using the following.
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of what employers expect of applicants and employers.
    2. Complete application forms properly.
    3. Demonstrate knowledge of skills necessary for an effective interview.
    4. Develop a resume.
    5. Demonstrate knowledge of specific skills necessary to finding a job.
  11. Make decisions.
    1. Demonstrate knowledge of what his/her goals are and their value.
    2. Make appropriate decisions
